I am a Texan, and I am quite fond of being a Texan.Recently,I bought a bluebonnet plant for Texas Independence Day, and I keep encouraging my bluebonnet plants along and in my driveway. Every day with a few good pecans is a pretty good day. And then, there’s the state song, “Texas, Our Texas!” There seems to be a movement against state songs. They seem too pompous, too “over the top.” I don’t share in that view. For a long time after 1836, our state song did not exist. It was actually written in 1924 by William J. Marsh, of Texas Christian University fame, with some help on the lyrics by Gladys Yoakum Wright. Of course, Alaska became a state in 1959, so “largest and grandest”was changed to“boldest and grandest.”
