Ralph Owens, 80, of Wellington, Texas, passed away Monday, Jan. 8, 2024, at his Lubbock,Texas home.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, at the First Methodist Church in Wellington with Rev.Gene Weinette, pastor, and Pastor Jody Wilson, of Trinity Fellowship Church in Lubbock, officiating. Burial will follow in North Fairview Cemetery. Arrangements are by Adams Funeral Home of Wellington. The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 11.

Pall bearers are Dennis Cudd, Doug Daniel, Tony Cox, John O’Rear, Danny Gray and Jimmy Brown.

Ralph was born May 18,1943, in St. Joseph Hospital in Wellington to Steve and Martha Owens. He graduated from Wellington High School in 1960 and attended Clarendon College.

He married Rebecca Holliman on May 26,1968,in his parents’ home in Wellington. Ralph started Owens Butane in October 1964 while also farming until 1972, when he opened Owens Farm Supply in Wellington. In 1993, he opened Owens Supply in Childress with his son, Dudley. Ralph retired in 2014.

Ralph served the community of Wellington in many ways, including as a founding member of the Lions Club; as president, vice president and director of the Collingsworth County Chamber of Commerce; on the City of Wellington Council; and as mayor for many, many years. He served on the Panhandle Regional Planning Commission; served as a director and board member for the startup of the Opportunity Center; served as a member of the Wellington ISD Board; served as president of Panfork Baptist Encampment, being the first lay person to serve in that capacity; and served on the board of directors of City State Bank.

Ralph also served on various committees of the First Methodist Church, where he most enjoyed being the Sunday bartender for coffee, soft drinks,cookies and donuts for years, watching the kids grow up in the church.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, both in 1994; a grandson, Keaton Spence Owens, in 2011; and his oldest brother, Richard Owens.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca, of the home; a daughter, Renee’ and husband Michael Lewis, of Derry, N.H.; a son, Dudley Owens and wife Britany, of Springtown, Texas; his youngest daughter, Jill and husband Jason Dugan, of Wellington; grandchildren Barrett and wife Christina Huntress, of Vallejo, Calif., Nikki Huntress, of Manchester, N.H., Hayley Neff and husband Ty,of Beverly,Mass., Blake Owens, of Springtown, Brice Dugan and Dixon Dugan, both of Wellington, and Bronson Matthews, of Springtown; great-grandson Austin Hole, of Manchester; his brother, Robert Owens and wife Kitty, of Wellington; and sister-in-law Jacqulyn Owens, of Memphis, Texas; along with many nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the First Methodist Church in Wellington or the Trinity Fellowship Church in Lubbock.
