Body

Ernestene Gosnell Cummings, 94, of Wellington, Texas, passed away Tuesday, April 4, 2023, surrounded by her family.

Funeral services took place at 2 p.m. Friday, April 7, 2023, at the First Methodist Church with Joe Stewart officiating. Burial followed in Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements were by Adams Funeral Home of Wellington.

Grandsons Cole Cummings, Talon Cummings, Logan Cummings, Matt Cummings, Casey Cummings and Rusty Cummings served as casketbearers. A great-grandson, Ethan Cummings, served as Honorary Pallbearer.

She was born on Sept. 5, 1928, in Blansett, Ark., to William J. and Inez Leona Mae Ritz Gosnell. She came to Quail, Texas, with her family in 1929.

Ernestene graduated from Quail High School. She married Wayne Cummings on Aug. 3, 1947, in Wellington. He preceded her in death in 1991.

Early on, she stayed home to raise her boys and help Wayne farm. Later in life, Ernestene served as the custodian of the First Methodist Church for over 10 years, and then she assumed the same position at the Community Bank for over 10 more years, keeping both places spotless. She took pride in whatever she did.

A member of the First Methodist Church, Ernestene served in every area possible. She loved her church and family dearly.

She had a true servant’s heart and was the consummate hostess when called upon at a moment’s notice. Ernestene grew an excellent garden every year she was able, which was basically every year. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends, putting up vegetables from her garden and gladly sharing them with others. Quilting and dancing were hobbies she enjoyed.

There’s no doubt that it can be said that Ernestene did her part.

Ernestene was also preceded in death by her parents; six sisters; and three brothers.

Her survivors include three sons, Joe Cummings and his wife, Penny, Mike Cummings and his wife, Tina, and Tim Cummings and his wife, Toni, all of Wellington; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren, all whom she dearly loved and spoiled.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the Wellington Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 321, Wellington, TX 79095.
