CHILDRESS — Paying tribute to the 343 New York City Fire Department (FDNY) firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on Sept. 11, 2001, the Childress Fire Department and Childress Main Street will host a 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11 at Fair Park Stadium.
“This is a very moving event,” Childress Main Street Director Susan Leary said, inviting the public to attend. “Please join us and honor those fellow Americans lost that horrible day.”
While the Childress firefighters climb 1,908 stairs, the equivalent of the 110 flights of stairs scaled by the FDNY at the World Trade Center, the public is encouraged to walk the track in support.
Additionally, moments of silence will be taken throughout the day, including 8:46 a.m., when hijackers crashed Flight 11 into the north tower; 9:03 a.m., when hijackers crashed United Airlines Flight 175 into the south tower; 9:37 a.m., when hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon; and 10:03 a.m., when passengers launched a counterattack on the hijackers aboard United Airline Flight 93, resulting in the plane crashing into an empty field near Shanksville, Pa.
Donations for the fire department will also be accepted at the event.
