WELLINGTON – The Wellington Independent School District (ISD) Board of Education met in special session Monday, Aug. 29 in the superintendent’s office.
President Cody Phillips called the meeting to order at 12:05 p.m. with a quorum present. Members Lance Kane, Jonathan Killian, Mark Lemons and Alison Strickland attended. Members Brad Bawcom and Gene Pena were absent. School personnel present included Wellington ISD Superintendent Kurt Ashmore, business manager Dian Souder and secretary Kellye Conner.
Phillips opened and closed the Public Hearing on the Proposed Budget for the 2022-23 school year and the Public Hearing on the Proposed 2022 Tax Rate with no response from the public.
The board adopted the 2022-23 school year budget General Fund and Cafeteria Fund by function as presented.
Additionally, the board approved the Resolution to Set Tax Rate, setting the 2022 tax rate at $0.94410 for maintenance and operations. The resolution is in writing and is being acted upon by the board.
The board amended the 2021-22 School Year Budget as presented by Souder.
The board endorsed Cindy Spanel, of Amarillo Highland Park, to be the Wellington ISD representative for the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Board of Directors.
The board also approved the Continuing Education and Training Clearinghouse that include the following trainings: suicide prevention; strategies for establishing and maintaining positive relationships among students, including conflict resolution; preventing, identifying, responding to and reporting incidents of bullying; safety training program; increasing awareness of issues regarding sexual abuse, sex trafficking and other maltreatment of children; increasing awareness and implementation of trauma-informed care; and administration of an epinephrine auto-injector.
In his superintendent’s report, Ashmore reported enrollment figures, including 229 students in elementary, 135 in junior high and 152 in high school for a total of 516 students as of Aug. 15, and 236 students in elementary, 135 in junior high and 157 in high school for a total of 528 students as of A ug. 22.
The board also address that Region 16 is providing new Head Start playground equipment.
