The agricultural leader of Collingsworth County, including the High Plains and South Plains for decades, was Francis Oral Masten. He was born in June 1890, the oldest of 11 children of William Cornelius Masten Jr.

A Memphis native, John R. Ballew taught history for 25 years in the trenches of the Texas public school system. He is a triple master: a Master of Science from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, a master plumber from Texas and a master mason.
