It’s election season again. Over the next several months, you’re bound to hear an array of promises from the candidates and speculation from the pundits on what those promises,if enacted,could mean for the country.But how might these possible outcomes affect your financial future? The one positive the City of Wellington possessed throughout the years was an abundance of quality leadership. Surnames like Sullivan, Singley, Sims, Wells, Fires, Leggitt, Masten, Templeton, Handley, Cudd, Coleman, Henard and Glenn are just a few examples.

A Memphis native, John R. Ballew taught history for 25 years in the trenches of the Texas public school system. In 1889, the Isbell family ventured to Collingsworth County from Mississippi and pitched a tent on the site where the current courthouse is located. The family met adversity after they relocated to Harris County when Judge J.M. Isbell, the first Judge of Collingsworth County, was shot and killed.A few years later, Newton Bonner, the father of Georgiana Isbell, the judge’s wife, met the same fate when he was also shot and killed.

On Jan. 29, 1891, an alarm went up that hostile warriors were going to attack near Salisbury. This was brought on by someone claim ing to hear war whoops and bloodthirst y yells while ob serving smoke in the distance. The fear of an assault was relayed abroad by telegraph wire and the Fort Worth and Denver Railroad. The citizens then barricaded themselves to wait for the soon-to-be onslaught.

In the early 60s, public schools and colleges were just beginning integration of public education in the south. The Southwest Conference was moving at a snail’s pace to integrate.

My claim to fame is that I ran into Kenny King while playing football for the Mem phis Cyclones in 1974. When we met, he was playing fullback for the Clarendon Broncos, and I was proud to be on the team and start at tight end for the Cyclones. The King went on to break a Super Bowl record when he played with the Oakland Raiders.
