Wellington VFW Post honors Kane’s service

Rodney Kane, left, accepts a keepsake Bible in memory of his dad, Art Kane, from Wellington Glynn Moore Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6439 Quartermaster Epifanio “Jr.” Castillo at the Tri-County Co-op office in Dodson. VFW personnel carry on the tradition in recognition of veterans’ service to their country. A native of Michigan, Art Kane served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater in World War II. During the Battle of Okinawa, he met Carthel Lewis of Collingsworth County. Lewis told Kane about his beautiful, single cousin in Texas. Art and Olyse Camp corresponded by mail throughout the war, and after his discharge, they met and married on June 18, 1947, in Hudson, Mich. The Kanes raised their three sons, Rodney Kane, Larry Kane and Steve Kane, in the Dodson and Arlie communities. Olyse Kane died Oct. 23, 2014, and Art Kane died Nov. 27, 2020.
