DUNCAN, Okla. — Against 5A Duncan High School, the Demons’ passing game and a late score sealed the 26-16 victory against the Skyrockets last Friday, Aug. 27.
To open the game, Wellington scored on a 70-yard kickoff return by junior Jordan Nation. With the successful two-point conversion, the Rockets took an 8-0 lead. Almost 30 seconds later, Duncan added a score of its own on a 67-yard pass.
With an interception to ease into scoring position, Wellington junior Barret Phillips took the ball to the endzone on a four-yard run in the second quarter. The two-point conversion put Wellington up 16-7 at halftime.
In a big third quarter, Duncan moved into scoring territory on a pass to get them to the one-yard line. The Demons ran it in to make it 16-14 to gain on the Skyrocket lead.
Moments later, Duncan’s defense caused a fumble on Wellington’s offensive drive. With great field position, the Demons took their first lead of the game on a 15-yard pass, making the score 20-16.
As the time wound down, Duncan had to try and stop Wellington’s offense from taking the lead for the win. With 10 seconds left, the Demons made a big defensive play to seal the victory. A host player intercepted the Skyrocket pass and ran it back for the pick-6 to increase the lead to 26-16 and secure the victory.
Junior Gumaro Rincon led in rushing yards for the Skyrockets with 93 yards in 14 runs. Phillips had 65 yards on 14 carries. Folk added 50 yards on 13 attempts. Sophomore Carson Tarver completed two of five passes for Wellington.
