CHILDRESS – After more than 38 years with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Childress District Engineer Marty Smith is set to retire on Aug. 31.

A 1979 graduate of Childress High School, Smith worked summers for TxDOT from 1980 to 1983 while attending Texas Tech University. In May of 1984, Smith began working for the Childress District full time in the Area Office.

Smith worked his way up the ladder at TxDOT with his first promotion coming in 1992 as the Assistant Area Engineer. In 1995, he was promoted to District Design Engineer, and three years later he was promoted to the Director of Transportation, Planning and Development. Following the retirement of Terry Keener, Smith was named the Childress District Engineer in October of 2011.
