CHILDRESS – Childress Blue Crew, a non-profit program aimed at offering free afterschool care to Childress Elementary students third through fifth grade, is expected to begin this fall.
Open from the close of school until 5:30 p.m. every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, the Childress Blue Crew plans to offer more than just afterschool care. Children will also have the opportunity to receive tutoring assistance provided by schoolteachers and high school student mentors.
“The purpose is to provide afterschool care for children who might otherwise be at home alone or for students needing additional help with schoolwork,” Mike Henderson, a member of the Childress Blue Crew Board of Directors, said. “We want to ensure youth in Childress have access to resources that foster excellence in education, character building and citizenship.”
Supported by community donations, the program will also provide children with an afternoon snack and time for recreational activities, including occasional special programs.
“There will be no fees to the children,” Henderson said. “Support for the program will be through donations. There will also be opportunities for community volunteers.”
Set to launch the second six weeks of the 2021-2022 school year, the program will be held at the Church of Christ, which – due to its proximity to Childress Elementary School – offers advantages in transportation, access to internet and playground facilities and safety and security.
Following distribution of applications during the first week of school, program participants will be chosen via a selection process, Henderson said.
“This will be a community project with participation of the schools, all of the local churches, various clubs and organizations and interested individuals,” Henderson said. “We anticipate growth as we see the needs of our children being met.”
The Childress Blue Crew Board of Directors includes Mercedes Contreras, James Driver, Henderson, John Lott and Janet Pierce. Executive Director is Kaitlin Lambert.
Community volunteers and donations are welcome. Childress Blue Crew holds a Texas 501c3 charter.
