CANYON — Nine Wellington High School students departed at 6 a.m. on Friday, April 9 for the UIL Region 1 Academic Meet on the campus of West Texas A&M University.
Coached by Holly Johnson, junior Jacey Clark placed fourth in accounting. Also a junior, Luis Moreno took fourth place in spelling and vocabulary. He is coached by Karoline Ashmore. Both students will serve as alternate to state as only first, second and third places advance to Austin.
Students competed at the district event held March 25 in Shamrock to advance to the regional contest. District individual and team results are as follows:
The team placed first while individual places were first Jacey Clark, second Barret Phillips, third Courtney Crytser and fifth Hunter Stark.
Current Issues and Events:
The team placed second. Sammy McLain placed fifth individually and Nick Self sixth. Kenna Darrow and Mason Folk completed the team.
Katie Green took third place.
Brandon Cooper placed first.
The team placed first with Green as the first place individual and Emma Kane fourth. Crytser served as a member of the team.
Dani Ponder placed first.
Summer Owens took fifth place.
Juliana Castaneda placed second.
Spelling and Vocabulary:
Luis Moreno placed third and Caleb Weinette placed sixth.
Other WHS contest coaches included Creighton Henderson, Marnie Kane, Landey Waters and Czrena Watts.
“The WHS staff does a fantastic job coaching academic events, directing contests, grading tests and transporting students,” said Jermaine Cantu, WHS principal. “We had 10 students qualify for the regional meet. What a great job considering all we have dealt with this year.”
