WELLINGTON – At the March 8 meeting, the Wellington Independent School District Board of Education adopted the Order of Cancellation to cancel the May 1 General Trustee Election and to declare unopposed candidates Cody Phillips, Alison Strickland and Lance Kane elected for three-year terms beginning May 2021.
The board met in regular session with Phillips presiding. Brad Bawcom offered the opening prayer. Other members present included Kane, Mark Lemons, Gene Pena, Strickland and Carly Ward.
School personnel present were Kurt Ashmore, Jermaine Cantu, Edward Beck, Deidre Kane, Dian Souder, Greg Proffitt and Kellye Conner.
The board went into closed session to evaluate personnel. The board adopted the school calendar for the 2021-2022 school year as presented. In addition, the board approved TEA Missed School Day Waiver for Feb. 16, 17 and 18 to conserve energy and the possibility of outages due to the winter storm. The board also adopted the TEA mask requirement to make masks optional for students and teachers.
Superintendent Ashmore explained that WISD received an Accredited status. He reviewed the WISD District Improvement Plan explaining that it contains the goals and objectives for the district for this school year compiled by the District-Wide Improvement Committee.
Ashmore reported that the following contracts have been renewed for 2021-2022 as recommended by campus principals:
10-month term contracts – Karoline Ashmore, Jessica Ballard, Kacy Cabbell, Jordan Conner, Amanda Davis, Dell Davis, Penny Davis, Shari Davis (retire/rehire), Debbie George, Rhae Jones, Karrie Hudson, Amy Inman, Beatriz Jaimes, Marnie Kane (CATE agreement), Mitzie Killian, Becky Lampe, Ashley Long (nurse), Lisa Manuel (ESL agreement), Melanie McLain, Katie Page, Lauren Patterson, Janelle Popwell, Heather Proffitt, John Scott (dual-teacher), Carrie Skelton, Erin Smith, Stacie Smith, Rachelle Sumrall, Chandi Taylor, Donna Thaten, Jessica Thomas, Lesa Thornberry, Lana Tillman, Carrie Warren, Landey Waters, Czrena Watts and Megan Wischkaemper.
11-month term contracts – Jeff Anderson (dual), Ashly Cantu, Carly Carter (dual), Vicki Decker, Creighton Henderson (dual), Shelby Jameson (dual), Joe Jones (dual), Renessa Klink, Justin Mixon (dual), Mark Montgomery (dual), Meagan O’Rear (dual), Quenton Patterson (dual) and Chris Sumrall (dual).
12-month term contracts – John Scott (dual-technology), Dian Souder (non-certified) and Drew Taylor.
10-month probationary contracts – Jill Dugan, Blue Franklin (dual), Shillalie Jones, Mikki Lewis and Brandi Weinette.
The principals and athletic director gave their reports.
Ashmore is happy to report that WTAMU in Canyon will be hosting all the regional events this spring. The UIL academic meet will be April 16. Girls regional golf will be April 19 and 20. Boys regional golf is scheduled for April 21 and 22. The regional track meet will be April 24, and regional tennis is planned for April 26 and 27.
