CHILDRESS – After winning Grand Champion Steer at the 2021 Childress County Livestock Show, Isaiah Dunn placed sixth out of 75 with his exotic cross steer at The Patriot Junior Market Steer Show in Abilene.
“Placing that high just blew my mind,” said Dunn, a senior at Childress High School. “This year has been exciting. I’ve set goals and accomplished them.”
This accomplishment left his mother almost speechless.
“I can’t even put it into words,” said Sheryl Dunn, who got emotional during the interview. Her mother died this past year, making it bittersweet. But her father was there to see her son’s big moment. “It was a proud moment. Isaiah showed the steer in an awesome way.”
Out of 1,700 kids, less than 200 sold. Isaiah’s sixth place finish qualified him for the sale. His mother said they specifically bought the steer for the Fort Worth Stock Show. But it was cancelled because of COVID-19.
Even with the cancellation, Isaiah said it’s been the best year of his show career. At the Childress County Livestock Show, he was the Heifer Grand Champion, Steer Grand Champion and Steer Reserve Grand Champion. He also took home the Senior Cattle Showmanship award.
“This whole year, the whole experience has definitely been different,” he said. “But it’s been the best.”
