WELLINGTON — Parents and grandparents gathered in the WHS auditorium to honor the state semifinal championship Skyrockets and witness the awards ceremony.
For only the sixth time in school history, the 2020 football team made it to the state semifinals, noted Coach Greg Proffitt as he welcomed the crowd to the 11 a.m. festivities on Jan. 20.
“Thank you parents and grandparents for the support you give these guys and for keeping us well fed on the road,” Coach Proffitt said. “We appreciate all the miles you traveled this year to support the 13-1 Skyrockets.”
Principal Jermaine Cantu announced the names as Coach Proffitt draped each player, cheerleader, manager, coach and the administration with individual UIL state semifinalist 2A Division II medals as they crossed the stage lined with gold footballs and the semifinal plaque.
Coach Quenton Patterson, the last coach to accept his medal, had the honor of draping Coach Proffitt with his state semifinal award.
Superintendent Kurt Ashmore, WJHS Principal Edward Beck, WES Principal Deidre Kane, Rocket Regiment Director Justin Mixon and Assistant Director Carly Carter accepted their medals as well. Coach Proffitt presented Cantu with his semifinalist medal to conclude the historic event.
