WELLINGTON — Early voting for the special election began Monday, Jan. 11 and will continue through Tuesday, Jan. 19 to fill a vacancy for Texas State House of Representatives District No. 68 seat recently vacated by Senator-elect Drew Springer.
Election Day will be Saturday, Jan. 23. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
Four Republicans and one Democrat filed with the Secretary of State for the special election to replace Springer. The filing deadline for a place on the Jan. 23 special election ballot was Jan. 4.
The sole Democratic candidate is Charles D. Gregory, a retired postal worker from Childress, according to the secretary of state’s office.
The four GOP candidates for the rural seat in northwest Texas are John Berry, a Jacksboro financial planner; Jason Brinkley, Cooke County judge; Craig Carter, a former candidate for overlapping Texas Senate District 30; and David Spiller, a Jacksboro attorney and Jacksboro school board trustee.
Local citizens wanting to vote early can come to the Collingsworth County Clerk’s office in the courthouse during regular business hours between 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Signs outside of the courthouse will direct voters to the north door of the courthouse. If the door is locked, please call the clerk’s office at 806-447-2408. Polls will be closed Monday, Jan. 18 in observance of Martin Luther King Day.
The Collingsworth County polling places on Jan. 23 are as follows:
• Pct. 101 – Rocket House.
• Pct. 201 – Collingsworth County Courthouse.
• Pct. 301 – Calvary Baptist Church.
• Pct. 401 – Bura Handley Community Building.

A special election for the State House of Representatives, District 68 is for Jan. 23. Early voting started Monday, Jan. 11 and goes through Tuesday, Jan. 19 at the Law Library on the second floor of the Childress County Courthouse. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Voting will be closed on Monday, Jan. 18 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. On election day, residents in Precinct 101 will vote at the Housing Authority at 407 Ave. B NW, Precinct 201 will vote at Church of Christ Fellowship Hall at 210 2nd St. NE, Precinct 301 will vote at City of Childress Auditorium Foyer at Fair Park and Precinct 401 will vote at Calvary Baptist Church at 1606 Ave. I NW. Polling locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

House District 68 includes the counties of Childress, Collingsworth, Cooke, Cottle, Crosby, Dickens, Fisher, Floyd, Garza, Hall, Hardeman, Haskell, Jack, Kent, King, Montague, Motley, Stonewall, Throckmorton, Wheeler, Wilbarger and Young.
