CHILDRESS – Childress ISD students can now eat free for the remainder of the school year.
While Childress ISD began offering free meals to all students on Sept. 1, the USDA recently released information giving school districts the opportunity to extend the free meal program for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year, said Childress ISD Child Nutrition Director Tracee Herbstritt.
“It’s been really good,” she said. “People are taking advantage of it. It’s boosted our numbers.”
Herbstritt said Childress ISD has seen around a 20% increase since the extension of the program. The school district is now serving free meals to approximately 65% of the total student population.
This program has two parts. Herbsritt said students are offered a full meal that consists of an entrée, which includes a meat and grain, vegetable options, fruit, milk choice and dessert on occasion.
The other option allows students, who bring a meal from home, to have the flexibility to add items to their meal through the “Pick 3 Free” program. For example, she said students can supplement their lunch by adding a fruit, vegetable and milk for free.
Herbstritt said this lifts a huge weight off of parents’ shoulders.
“This free meal option is a blessing to many families in our community during this uncertain time and helps support our amazing school district,” Herbsritt said. “It (this program) helps parents, so they don’t have to spend so much time preparing meals, or it allows students to eat more if they’re still hungry.”
Along with the free lunches being offered this school year, Herbsritt reminds parents and students that breakfast is offered for free as well. In fact, she said Childress ISD has been offering free breakfast for many years to all students.
For parents who have school age children not enrolled at Childress ISD and are interested in participating in the free meal program, they can contact Herbstritt for more information at email@example.com or 940-937-2501, extension 1040.
