CHILDRESS – More residents are expected to vote in Childress County this year than in the past several years, according to local voting officials.
“We have seen an increase in the last few months in new voter registration applications,” said Barbara Sue Parr, who recently retired from the Voter Registrar Office. “Some voters stated they had never voted or had not voted in years.”
In the 2016 November election, there were 2,743 Childress County eligible voters, Parr said. Turnout was about 75 percent or 2,077 voters. While Childress County eligible voters increased to 3,142 for the November election in 2018, only 1,764 (56 percent) turned out to vote.
As of Oct. 1, Childress County has 3,641 eligible voters, Parr said.
Early voting started Tuesday, Oct. 13. Because of COVID-19, Childress County Clerk Barbara Spitzer said there are a couple of voting location changes.
Early voting is located at the Law Library at the Childress County Courthouse. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 14-15, Oct. 19, Oct. 21-22 and Oct. 26-29, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 16, Oct. 23 and Oct. 30 and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 20.
Spitzer said Election Day polling location for Precinct 401 has changed from the Housing Authority on Ave. I NW to the Calvary Baptist Church on Ave. I NW.
“This will help us to separate the voters a bit better,” Spitzer said.
The other Election Day polling locations have stayed the same. Residents in Precinct 101 will vote at Housing Authority, Shady Grove Apartments at 407 Ave. B NW, Precinct 201 will vote at Church of Christ Fellowship Hall at 210 2nd St. SE and Precinct 301 will vote at the City of Childress Auditorium Banquet Room at Fair Park, 1000 Commerce St.
Polling locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
Applications for ballot by mail must be received no later than Friday, Oct. 23. They should be sent to Barbara Spitzer, Childress County Clerk, Childress County Courthouse, Box 4, Childress, TX 79201.
