Position open until May election
By Jackie Zimmerman
CHILDRESS – Place 2 Alderman Mike Dietrich resigned his Childress City Council seat Monday, Sept. 28.
Mayor Cary Preston read letter from Dietrich at the beginning of the meeting which Dietrich was not present.
Because the letter was not on the council’s agenda, the council formally accepted the resignation and had a plaque to present Dietrich thanking him for his service to the city during a special called meeting Oct. 2.
However, Dietrich was not present at the meeting.
City Secretary D’Linda Dockery said the vacancy left by Dietrich will be filled at the first available Uniform Election Date, which is the May 2021 election.
“We do not fill seats by appointment,” Dockery said. “It will be at the first available Uniform Election Date, which so happens to be the date that Alderperson 2 is up for election.
“We will have a vacancy there until May 2021,” she said, adding she will start accepting candidate applications Jan. 13, 2021 for the election scheduled for May 2, 2021.
The city council is made up of five alderpersons and one mayor. Even with two open seats, Position 4 and Position 2, the city can continue to carry out business as usual, Dockery said.
Per city charter, ordinances and resolutions require four affirmative votes of members of the council.
Dietrich did not respond to The Red River Sun’s request for comments. A detailed voice mail was left on his phone.
