CHILDRESS – Gary Ware added to his family tradition when he opened Ware Motors on Highway 287 in Childress on Monday, Aug. 10.
“We’re the oldest family-owned and operated car dealership in the Panhandle and Western Oklahoma,” said Ware, who grew up in the family business his grandfather started in April of 1949, Ware Chevrolet Buick. A few months later, his father joined the business. “It’s a natural fit being in the car business.”
Born and raised in Wheeler, Ware said he and his two brothers followed in their father’s footsteps and joined the family business in 1991. While his brother Bobby has retired, his brother Kent is still involved.
“We liked being in Wheeler,” he said. “I married my high school sweetheart. We have two boys.”
When Ware found out about Arvis Davis closing his dealership, he said they made the move. “Arvis was good friends with my dad and had a good relationship with him,” Ware explained. “We think it’s going to be a good opportunity. We have the reputation of going the extra mile to get whatever vehicle our customer needs.”

Sales Manager Jarod Ashley, who has 29 years of experience, also grew up in the car business. His father was the general manager (GM) of an Oldsmobile store in Kermit, Texas. At 12 years old, Ashley was washing cars. But one day everyone was busy, and he said he got to sell a car.
“I sold my first car and made $45 on my sale,” Ashley said with a big smile on his face. “I thought I was rich.”
Ashley, who has been a GM at dealerships in Plainview and Lubbock, has a saying he wants Childress and area residents to know: “Come our way and trade your way.”
Ware added to that. He wants customers to know they can shop at home and stay at home. “We deliver cars,” he said. “You can shop online, and we’ll bring the car to customers.”
Ware said they also keep a wide variety of vehicles.
“Our bread and butter is General Motors – Chevrolet, Buick and GMC,” Ware said. “But we also have Toyota, Chrysler, Ford, Ram, Nissan and Jeep.”
Ware Motors is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. But Ware said they’ll be available by appointment if someone needs to come in after hours.
They will have a grand opening event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22. Ware said they will have prizes, giveaways and food.
