Special to The Sun—
AMARILLO – A constant in the Red River Sun region, Rayne Water Conditioning is celebrating 50 years of business in the Amarillo Metro Area.
Servicing residential and commercial systems since 1970, the Durham family has been leaders in the Amarillo area water industry providing the best available water softeners and drinking water systems for residential and commercial uses.
According to family members, Don Durham started in the water treatment business in 1965 while working with Tom Culligan in Illinois. Quickly learning the business and earning top salesman in the area, Durham was asked to utilize his knowledge and skills in Amarillo to help establish a new store.
Durham, the love of his life Helen, and their three children transplanted to Amarillo in 1968 where they soon began to enjoy the Panhandle area and the people in it.
In 1970, wanting to do more for the community his family now called home, Durham decided to start his own business, Southwest Water Conditioning. With this venture Durham taught his four children the meaning of integrity.
Earning customers trust with a firm handshake and kept promises, Durham built his business. In 1990 Durham’s youngest son, Chris Durham, began following in his dad’s footsteps learning all he could from him.
In 1995, Chris signed under Rayne and started managing the family water business with Don Durham as director of operations. Many long-term customers and life-long friends have been made during the 50-year journey.
“Rayne has supplied us with the very best water softener equipment for our homes and ranches and have always done outstanding work before, during and after the sale,” said Robert Owens of Wellington.
Saundra James, also of Wellington, said she has used Rayne for at least 20 years.
“They have always responded quickly to any problems with our water,” she said.
Don Durham, now a great grandfather living at Greenbelt Lake, enjoys visiting with the summer crowds.
“You can’t stop doing what you love,” said Durham, who is semi-retired. “Offering people a product that improves their lives brings me great joy, I love my work.”
