Getting ready for Friday night lights
By Whitney Wyatt/The Red River Sun—
CHILDRESS – “Wear your mask, so I can wear my helmet…. Thank you.”
With the first football scrimmage less than a month away, Childress High School senior Devron Sims took to Twitter to encourage Childress residents to wear face masks amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I just feel like everyone needs to start wearing their masks, because if not, then the coronavirus just might get worse,” Sims said. “Without a football season this year it might be a depressing thing for some seniors with their last year on the line to prove themselves.”
A 2019 all-district wide receiver and defensive back, Sims has already caught the eye of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. On its website, it states Sims is “poised to showcase the Bobcats’ athleticism as one of the top teams in the region.”
But for that to happen, the Bobcats need to play on Friday nights. The first scrimmage is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 15 against Wellington. The first game is set for 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, against Panhandle at Fair Park Stadium.
“In Childress, Friday night lights are the best,” Sims said. “Without Friday night lights nothing would feel the same in Childress.”
