Carroll Daves breaks off a couple of branches trying to get a clear view of his blooming century plant along 14th Street in Wellington. His good friend, the late Larry Pribble, planted the Agave americana about five years ago. Native to Texas, Arizona and New Mexico plus Mexico, the plants grow best in an area that receives at least a half-day of sun and in well-draining soil. (The Red River Sun/Bev Odom)
