Peggy Arlene Sledge Stewart passed away July 1, 2020, in her home in Childress a few days before her 89th birthday.
The Celebration of Life for Peggy Stewart will be held on Saturday, July 25, at 1 p.m. at the Childress Church of Christ, 210 2nd Street SE, with Dr. Mike Henderson officiating. The service will be streamed through Childress Church of Christ Facebook website.
Peggy, the daughter of Thomas Henderson Sledge and Vennie Venita Robinson Sledge, was born in Guymon, Oklahoma, July 17, 1931, one of six siblings. She graduated from high school with the class of 1949 and married Billy Ray Stewart of Guymon on September 9, 1951.
They started their family in Roosevelt, Oklahoma, the birthplace of their first child, Raylene Ann, in 1955. Three years later Stanley Ray was born in 1958, in Decatur. In 1962, Thomas Edward was born in Granbury.
Peggy and Bill lived in several towns from Oklahoma to Utah to California, finally residing in Childress, Texas. Peggy’s husband died in 2005. Peggy was not only a homemaker but also served as a medical records transcriber and secretary for attorneys.
Peggy enjoyed entertaining guests in her home and taking food to others in need. Her interests included playing scrabble, making ceramic figurines, painting, growing flowers and watching reruns of Lawrence Welk. Peggy was a prayer warrior, daily Bible reader and never missed a worship service or activity if possible. She sincerely loved family, country and Jesus.
Peggy is survived by her daughter, Raylene Weaver and husband Ken of Midland, and her sons, Stan Stewart and wife Robin of Lubbock and Tom Stewart and wife Peg of Lolo, Montana.
Peggy has eight grandchildren and 16 greats. She has one surviving brother, Fred Sledge of Guymon and a sister, Vella Gum of Bracketville, Texas.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband Bill, parents Tom and Vennie, brothers Wayne and Earl and sister Evelyn.
