CHILDRESS – The 132nd Childress Old Settlers Rodeo is scheduled for July 17 and 18, keeping it the oldest consecutive rodeo in the State of Texas.
“Everything is good to go unless the governor shuts the state of Texas down,” said Childress Old Settlers Director Stephanie Martin. “It’s a relief. I’m excited about it. We don’t want to lose our consecutive years.”
While Martin said they have cancelled the dance, everything else will happen. She strongly suggests people wear face masks to the rodeo and follow COVID-19 social distancing.
The children’s events will start the rodeo at 6 p.m. both nights at the Mashburn Event Center. Mutton bustin’ is for kids seven years and under, calf riding is for eight- to 12-year-olds and steer riding is for 13- to 15-year-olds. The rodeo follows at 8 p.m. both nights. There will be junior barrels and junior breakaways.
Tickets are $10, and kids five and under get in free. La Unica will provide food at the concession stand this year.
“People are asking if we’re having the rodeo,” added Martin. “They’re excited. People are ready to get out.”
The parade also will be held, and is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, July 18.
Those interested in kid and junior events can contact Nedra Martin at 940-585-6083. Registration for other events in the rodeo is from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., July 8 to July 12. The rodeo registration is from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. July 8 to 12. Contestants can call 903-287-7852 or go to the nextgenrodeo app online.
Martin, who has served on the board since 2005, said it was a unanimous decision to move forward with the Childress Old Settlers Rodeo.
“Everybody is good to move forward,” she said. “But it’s a lot of work in a short amount of time.”
The board consists of President Kevin Martin, Vice President Jerrold Woodson, Treasurer Rodney Murray, Secretary Joel Hassel, Directors Martin, Justin Hassell, Jerry McCracken, Kortney Hassell, Kade Chapmen, Eric Jouett and members Britain Brewer, Jason Lane and Youell.
On behalf of the board, Stephanie Martin would like to thank sponsors.
